Sleeping
If you have trouble
sleeping you are possibly at your wits end. The emotional
turmoil and physical problems lack of sleep can cause is
frightening. Learn to identify the problem so you can take
action. You deserve to sleep well.
Did
you know that up to 33% of the US nation suffers from some form
of sleep disorders, which results in trouble sleeping for many
people. Depression, ongoing or acute anxiety and psychological
turmoil is a leading course of sleep issues, but other sleeping
disorders like sleep apnea, snoring problems (by you or your
partner), can result in lost sleep that can never be regained.
Abuse of alcohol or being extremely overweight can also lead to
sleeping troubles.
The first thing you
really need to do is to try and ascertain any pattern on your
sleep problems. Does it occur mainly on the night before a work
day? If you area shift worker, then you are almost certain to
have some sleep related problems, as shift work plays havoc
with your body clock at the best of times. Have you been
diagnosed with a sleep disorder in the past. If so, do you use
any medications? Many of the over-the-counter treatments
and remedies are not particularly effective and can end up
causing more problems than they solve.
If you are a sleep
apnea sufferer, or believe you may be, a trip to the doctors,
and a sleep survey may help to confirm you condition, and/or
provide more effective treatments. But if you are sure your
symptoms are mild, you could try some of the snoring aids and
sleep apnea devices to see if they bring any
relief.
Insomnia is a well
known sleep disorder that can be caused by stress, the side
effects of medication, jet lag, temperature extremes etc. This
condition is often characterized by taking a long time to fall
asleep, waking up repeatedly throughout the night and being
unable to get back to sleep once you've woken. It is a
condition that has a profoundly debilitating effect on the
sufferer.
Sleep Apnea is a
potentially severe sleep disorder for some sufferers. The
sufferer suffers from prolonged (over 10 seconds) episodes of
not breathing during their sleep. These can cause a rise in
blood pressure and can on rare occasions, be life threatening.
An obstruction of the nasal passages or more often, the airway
being blocked by the soft tissues of the tongue and throat over
relaxing, the sufferer often snores loudly and feels very
sleepy during the daytime. If you believe you may have sleep
apnea, get to your doctors or sleep specialist for support and
a diagnosis.
If your trouble
sleeping is due to snoring and of mild obstructive sleep apnea,
you could consider trying a sleep apnea
mouthpiece or similar devices like a snoring
chin strap to relieve your symptoms. These are cheap,
effective in many cases, and provide rapid relief. The
snoring pillow is a great device to keep you in the
correct position throughout the night to keep your airway
clear and unhindered.
So if you are having
trouble sleeping and not getting the amount of sleep you need,
it is really important to seek some treatment. Relaxation
techniques, sleep aids, and knowledge are all important
strategies to help with your condition. Sleeping pills are
often used, and can provide useful treatment in the short term,
but should be avoided as a long term
solution.
We hope this brief
article has provided you with some useful insight, and we wish
you good luck in finding a solution to your trouble
sleeping.
