Snoring Mask
Is a snoring mask a realistic and viable snoring aid for the
majority of snorers? The term snoring mask is a little bit of a
misnomer, as there really is no 'mask' that is designed to stop
snoring. Snoring masks are generally considered to be a mask
that is used with cpap (continuous positive airway pressure)
therapy to reduce the symptoms of sleep apnea and other
breathing related sleep disorders.
That said, severe snoring is closely linked with obstructive
sleep apnea, and recent studies in the United Kingdom suggested
that up to 70% of snorers may also suffer from sleep apnea, so
learning about sleep apnea or snoring masks may well be a good
idea, even for the moderate snorer.
The range of stop
snoring solutions is truly massive these days, with so
many companies bringing snoring remedies of one sort
or another onto the market to assist snorers. The idea of
using an anti snore mask is one that may appeal to you,
but it is always important to spend some time talking to
your doctor or health care professional to make sure that
you do not have a more serious underlying medical
condition that needs treatment.
Snoring aids vary widely, from the non invasive snoring chin
straps and anti snore pillows, through to snoring surgery,
either to remove tissue from the throat or to clear blockages
or structural defects in the nasal passages. Many people are
not keen to undergo snoring surgery, so finding an alternative
is important. The snoring mask, in conjunction with a
cpap breathing
machine is one possible alternative.
When looking for a mask for snoring, you are going to
actually be considering a full face or nasal cpap mask to use
with a cpap machine every night whilst you sleep. The cpap
machine administers air at a slight positive pressure to the
airway, preventing soft tissues from allowing the airway to be
restricted and causing the snoring noise.
Your doctor will ask you a number of questions about your
medical history, and will also need to carry out some form of
examination or sleep study to evaluate your needs.
Areas that will be considered include:
- Frequency of snoring
- Loudness and severity of the snoring
- Disturbances in breathing, holding the breath etc
- Does the snorer suffer headaches or daytime
drowsiness
- Consideration of lifestyle issues - smoking, obesity,
alcohol use etc
- Medications, allergies, seasonal considerations like
hay fever
If you doctor deems that you have sufficiently severe
snoring problem, they may prescribe or approve you to try out
cpap therapy with stop snoring mask.
About The Stop Snoring
Mask
The anti snoring mask is an anti snoring device that is worn
over the face, or perhaps just the nose of you select the nasal
mask variety. Air is administered to the snorer via a cpap hose
that is connected to a small compressor unit in a cpap machine.
These masks and the cpap unit ensure the airway is kept clear,
and minimize the chances of a sleep apnea episode from taking
place.
Many
people have some discomfort and mild anxiety when they
first start wearing these type of anti snore
devices. They get hot, find them restrictive, and give up
all to easily. Getting used to a snore mask can certainly
take some time, but there is little doubt that the
benefits to your health can often outweigh the
disadvantages.
Most of the cpap machines you can buy online come with a
basic mask that works fine, but is not necessarily built for
comfort. After some time, you may find that a new snoring mask
is a preferred option, and most bespoke masks like the Resmed
Quattro cpap mask or the
Mirage Activa cpap mask
will fit the majority of cpap machines.
Whether you have a short term snoring or sleep disorder that
can benefit from lifestyle change, or a long term condition
that needs constant treatment, you may benefit from the use of
a cpap machine and a snoring mask.
