Resmed

from sleep apnea and other associated sleep disorders to gain
control of their condition and regain there quality of
life.
Resmed CPAP (pronounced see pap) is an abbreviation of continuous
positive airway pressure and works by creating what is known as
a pneumatic splint to prevent the soft tissue of the upper
airway fro narrowing and collapsing. It works by channeling a
pressurized air flow from a generator, into a mask worn by the
patient on the face, and through to the upper
airway.
It is
used in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea some forms of
central sleep apnea, and was developed by Professor Colin
Sullivan in Sydney, Australia in 1981. Professor Sullivan
theorized that airway obstruction could be removed if
CPAP could be applied by way of the
nose. Testing his theory on a patient, he inserted tubes
into the patient’s nose and with a reverse running surgical
type vacuum pump supplying the pressurized air. The
experiment marked a turning point in the treatment of sleep
apnea conditions, and also heralded the first prototype of
what was to become the first of what is now a large range of
CPAP machines available to sufferers of varying degrees of
the condition known as sleep apnea.
ResMed
CPAP is a
recognized worldwide leader and innovator in the field of
development and manufacturer of products for treating and
managing respiratory conditions, not restricted to, but
focusing on what is commonly referred to as “sleep
disordered breathing”. Their products are available in
over seventy countries worldwide.
These
products are patient friendly, intruding as little as possible
into their lives, while bringing comfort and a more ordered
life, and freedom from the potentially life threatening
condition the sleep apnea can be.
When
patients are diagnosed with the condition, and subsequently
treated with CPAP, without exception reports of lowered blood
pressure, stress and anxiety levels, and gone too is the
constant fatigue that is so much a part of a sufferer’s life.
It also helps keeping them in an irritant free environment, one
which ensures that the patient does not contract any allergies.
This kind of a situation is attained by using CPAP filters
couple with the stock face mask. Usually, humidifiers also help
maintain the ambient moisture in the air during the winter
months.
Depending
on the degree of the condition will dictate how the patient is
treated, and to what type of machine they require. The
treatment usually involves the patient wearing CPAP masks or
what is known as a nasal pillow system, both of which are
attached a small, lightweight air generator which delivers a
positive air pressure, which act as a pneumatic splint,
supporting the airways and ensuring the said airway doesn’t
collapse, which could ultimately lead to suffocation, or worse.
These are also casually referred to as nasal masks which are
quite different from the full face mask that some treatments
may require.
One of
the most popular ResMed devices is the
Ultra Mirage II
nasal mask system, a mask so popular that it is even available
through online retailers like
Amazon
at discounted prices. The quality
of many a patient’s life has dramatically improved using this
method of treatment.
